THE BIOLOGY OF ANXIETY

When the mind senses danger, it commands the body to get ready to either: Fight. Freeze. Or Flee. (There is also a fourth F – Fawn which is seen in more complex PTSD and trauma cases).

All of these responses have one job….

To keep us alive.

The mind does this with a complex neural pathway…

First it triggers the release of the hormone adrenaline. 

Adrenaline makes the heart beat faster, the breathing rate speed up, and sugar to be released into the blood..

This helps the body react and respond to the threat by either running away or fighting. 

Have you ever heard people talk about feeling a “rush” or a “rush of adrenaline“. This is the feeling they’re talking about.

As adrenaline starts to subside and if the danger is still there, another stress hormone is released – cortisol. 

This is the hormone that keeps “the foot on the accelerator” as far as the stress response is concerned, keeping the mind and body in a state of high alert until the danger passes.

Which is, of course, all well and good if you actually are in danger…

This stress response is what helped early man survive being eaten by dinosaurs and sabre-toothed tigers long enough to evolve and become me and you today.

But, here’s the thing…

 

THE MIND TRIGGERS THE SAME STRESS RESPONSE REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE DANGER IS REAL OR IMAGINED...

What that means is, if you’re anxious about catching germs and getting sick, your mind may imagine germs everywhere (even in the most sterile environment) and that triggers the body’s response to fight or flee (or wash hands) in the same way as if you could actually see them.  

Your mind is hypervigilant for danger,

And this is down to two things: 

The words you use. And the pictures you imagine.

But when we’re constantly anxious, the stress response in the body stays switched on, thinking it’s constantly under attack, which triggers the release of more stress hormones…  

On and on and on…

We get trapped in a never ending cycle of fear-adrenaline-fear.

If you try to resist an emotion – say an unpleasant emotion like anxiety – it actually lasts longer…!

Doing things like avoiding triggers, accommodating your anxieties, distracting yourself or fighting the feeling by pretending it’s not happening may feel like positive ways of avoiding anxiety but they can actually just make the feeling last longer. 

Knowing that anxiety is just the mind’s way of helping us in some way is the first step to releasing anxiety for good.

But talking about anxiety in an attempt to get rid of it can often make it worse. If anxiety is a hole in the ground, talking about it just keeps making that hole bigger and deeper.

How I recovered from healthy anxiety - my story

I struggled with anxiety for years. In my case, it was health anxiety and it took over every waking moment of my life

At its peak, I was convinced that every lump and bump on my body was something serious, that I had an undetected terminal illness and that, despite test after test, my doctors were missing a crucial diagnosis. 

I Googled my symptoms constantly, sending myself into even further panic as every search just revealed one hundred different ways I might be dying. 

Needless to say, life was miserable

I spent most days in a state of high alert and panic, obsessing about every little symptom and catastrophising every second of the day.

They were very dark and lonely days.

I tried everything – counselling, CBT and alternative therapies like acupuncture and reflexology.

Nothing worked. 

In the end I was convinced that I would be in the grip of anxiety for good.

And then I discovered Rapid Transformational Therapy.

Is the Break Free from Anxiety - 6 Days to Inner Calm programme suitable for me?

The 6 Days to Inner Calm programme is designed as a very gentle but powerful programme for women, offering an introduction to Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) combined with meditation and coaching techniques. RTT is not recommended if you suffer from epilepsy or schizophrenia. If you have any health issues or concerns it is advised that you check with your doctor or medical practitioner before starting this programme.

How much time do I need a day to complete the programme?

Each daily lesson is broken down into three segments: a video, a workbook exercise and a mediation audio. Together they take no more than 30 minutes a day to complete, with the exception of Day Four, which has a longer RTT session. You can do all the segments in one go, or complete them at different times throughout the day.

What is Rapid Transformational Therapy?

RTT is a powerful form of therapy created by Marisa Peer, combining hypnotherapy, NLP, CBT and elements of psychotherapy.
